‘Dear John’ Beats Out ‘Avatar’

In Celebrity News, Movies on February 7, 2010 at 7:20 pm

Shocked?? I’m not. It’s about time that blue alien flick got knocked off its pedestal. And it makes it even funnier that it was a sappy chick flick that did it in.

Dear John has become the highest grossing flick over a Super Bowl weekend ever, bringing in more than $32.4 million. The film, starring that one dude from She’s the Man and that one chick from Jennifer’s Body, has beat many experts estimates over the weekend.

The flick had a huge Friday, making more than $13 million, while Avatar only made $6 million (impressively, only a -16% drop). The storms sweeping across the nation may have had an impact on the total grosses for both films, but given the huge lead Dear John creted on Friday, Avatar didn’t have a chance of catching up.

Nice to see sappy, romance novels can still be turned into high grossing films.

That gives you hope, Julia Roberts. That gives you hope.

‘Cause we all know your career needs a resurgance. What’s the last hit flick you had?? Exactly.

The Merger Is Complete! Marvel is Now Part of Disney!

In Movies on January 2, 2010 at 8:34 pm

So, does this mean we will be seeing Mickey Mouse kicking ass next to the likes of Spider-Man or Ant-Man? Come on, who wouldn’t want to see that!

The deal is done. Marvel shareholders have approved the sale of the company to animation giant, Disney. Both companies have released a statement to the press which you can find after the jump if you care to read it.

But the juice of the deal is this: Disney bought Marvel for more than $4 billion in cash and stocks and Disney now owns the entire catalogue of Marvel characters, which include Spider-Man, X-Men, and Iron Man.

Cool beans, but take heed Disney, I will not rest until I see a Mickey and Wolverine crossover. Just saying.

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to Thrill For Generations to Come

In Celebrity News, Movies, Music on December 30, 2009 at 6:45 pm

This is something that is well deserved.

Michael Jackson’s iconic music video, “Thriller,” is becoming immortalized by history…officially. This week, Jackson’s video was selected to be added into the National Film Registry this year by the Library of Congress.

This is the first time that a music video has been selected to join the cultural elite of films. Which brings up to an interesting point: “Thriller” isn’t technically a film. It’s a music video, which, yes, is 11 minutes long but that doesn’t consititute it as a film.

According to the Library of Congress, selects films that are “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” So, I guess “Thriller” could fall under that.

Anyway, it’s very fitting that this video has been selected seeing that we lost that artist who created it and one of the greatest performers of all time.

I’m content with that.

People Love Them Some Sherlock Holmes!

In Movies on December 26, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Wow. Sherlock Holmes, that one movie starring that one dude from Iron Man, has set a Christmas Day box office record, by grossing over $24.9 million beating Avatar and new release, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

But not by much I might add. Avatar, in its second week of release, managed to grab $23.5 million of the box office Christmas pie. And my favorite new release of the holiday season, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel is heading toward the right direction of passing its predecessor by earning $14.5 million in its third day of release. With that added in, the film has made over $41.4 million since its Wednesday release.

Not bad for a bunch of singing chipmunks. By the way, if you haven’t seen the movie, then, um, you are officially lame. Just throwing it out there.

I kid, I kid, but no seriously, go see the movie.

This holiday season is already proving to be a monstrous period for the box office. Total sales have already eclipsed last year’s total box office receipts around this time, bringing in over $82.9 million, a 31% rise.

Not bad. Oh and Warner Bros.? They set a record also for being the first movie studio to cross the 2+$billion mark in one year. And since they are few more days left in the ear, they will easily add to that total just to shove it in their competitor’s face.

Hell, I would.

Can Susan Boyle Be Stopped? #1 Again!

In Movies on December 24, 2009 at 2:49 am

Looks like there is a new Queen B in town and her name doesn’t rhyme with ‘Whatchusay.’

Susan Boyle’s debut album, “I Dreamed A Dream,” has topped the Billboard charts once again for the 4th consecutive week. Moving 661,000 copies this week (up 14% from last), Susan easily retained her title and is sitting pretty at the #1 spot. Susan Boyle’s debut album has sold more than 2.4 million units in the United States more than any other woman’s debut album EVER!

Not even the soulful sounds of Ms. Keys could stop Susan Boyle. Keyes came in a respectable second with 417,000 copies of her latest album, “The Element of Freedom,” sold.

Andrea Bocelli’s, “My Christmas,” sold an impressive 390,000 copies to continue it’s reign on the charts, only dropping to #3 from the second slot last week.

Taylor Swift’s, “Fearless,” continues to sell strong through the holiday season, selling 239,000 copies of her album pushing its total sales to over 5 million units sold.

Carrie Underwood, Lady Gaga, Michael Buble, Justin Beiber, Robin Thicke, and the second Glee soundtrack volume round out the top ten in that order.

Looks like there is no stopping Susan and I’m sure we’re going to see something of a repeat next week. But the question is, who is going to cut her rein short? Mary J. Blige, anyone? It’s got to happen sometime.

I doubt it, but who the hell knows anything when it comes to the cat lady from England. She could be buying Martha Stewart Living magazine subscriptions and catnip with all her earnings for all we know.

Hell. Someone watch her closely, please.

Avatar 2 Already Being Planned?

In Movies on December 24, 2009 at 1:16 am

That is according to director James Cameron.

While no script is in place, Cameron has stated that he has enough ideas to create at least two more Avatar films. With over $250 million worldwide in box office receipts, I think a sequel would be inevitable. But the question is: when to expect it?

Avatar took Cameron over 10 years to make, from script to screen. Developing the technology to make the film pop took a good majority of that time and of course, shooting the actual film when the technology was in place took some time. But now that the technology is ready and no longer needs to be developed, how long would it take for Cameron to spit out another Avatar adventure?

And what angle would he go for in the sequel? I’ve found this great article which gives some pretty good ideas on where Cameron could go with subsequent Avatar films.

What do YOU think? Too early to be thinking about a sequel?

Johnny Knoxville Can’t Be Serious.

In Celebrity News, Movies on December 24, 2009 at 12:40 am

I’m still trying to get past the fact that Jackass 3: The Movie has been given the go ahead to begin production.

Not only has it been greenlit, but the film will be shot in 3-D…using the same technology that “James Cameron’s Avatar,” used, according to star and producer, Johnny Knoxville.

Jackass 3-D begins shooting in January of 2010 with a projected release date of October 2010. Jeff Tremaine is taking the director’s seat once again alongside producers Spike Jonze and Johnny Knoxville.

What, MTV? Are you serious? I understand the previous Jackass films have made over $136 million combined and that’s where the real reason lies as to why this is even being considered, but does the world really need to see the inside of Steve-O’s ass in 3-D?

For some reason, call me crazy, but I think the answer is a resounding HELL NO!

Is Robert Downey Jr’s “Sherlock Holmes” Gay?

In Movies on December 22, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Hmm, interesting development in the world of Warner Bros.

Robert Downey Jr., you know that one guy who was once had a really big career, then got into drugs, lost his career, only to gain it back by playing some man made of iron, was on the David Letterman show promoting his new movie, “Sherlock Holmes,” when he jokingly referred to Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick, Dr. Watson as “homos.”

This of course is freaking out Warner Bros. executives as they don’t want audiences to think the story is about closeted detectives in London, who happen to know how to fight.

But I say this: it’s friggin 2009! Get over it! I’m sure people would care less if Holmes was straight or gay. If Bruno can make millions of dollars at the box office, so can Sherlock Holmes. This movie will make money either way because of the history of the character and the film’s stars.

If not, well, sucks for you Warner Bros. Hey, there’s always next year. Just make sure one of the stars of your flick doesn’t alude to anything gay, so have them stay away from using makeup on set, wardrobe, and craft services.

Oh wait.
