Jennifer Hudson, star of 2007’s “Dreamgirls,” has been called out by a South African acting union, The Creative Workers Union of South Africa. The Creative Workers Union of South African want to stop Hudson from playing Nelson Mandela’s wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, in a new Hollywood production detailing the former first lady’s life.
According to the AFP and Yahoo News, the union was quoted as saying, “It can’t happen that we want to develop our own Hollywood and yet bring in imports…his decision must be reversed, it must be stopped now.”
Okay, here’s my take on this. STFU! Let’s be happy that a movie about this courageous woman is being made, produced, and sold with the backing of Hollywood. If you want to make your OWN damn movie, using YOUR own actors, using YOUR own money, then by all means get on it! But don’t come harking your concerns about this. Although I don’t believe Jennifer Hudson is that great of an actress, this is an American production, and the producers believe she fits the bill. And don’t forget, there are plenty of other parts in the film that can go to South African actors, not just this particular one.
DOOR CLOSED.
